Pre-hab exercise programme

Pre-hab programme

Funded by WBUH, this prehabilitation exercise programme is available for patients who are waiting for DIEP reconstruction, and who will benefit from exercise prior to surgery.

Why are we running this programme? There is increasing evidence that physical pre-habilitation can mean a quicker recovery from surgery and potentially reduce the risk of post-op complications.  So this programme focuses on improving fitness, reducing weight and building strength before surgery.

What does it involve? A small group of 5 patients will take part in a programme of exercise, through tailored and supportive training sessions. These are led by specialist Leighton Bentley, at his studio in Norton, WR5 2PS.

The programme

•              One-hour individual consultation session

•              12 x weekly one-hour group gym sessions

•              2 x monthly follow-up group sessions

•              A one-hour individual closing session

•              A designed programme for you to do at home, with the aim to maintain fitness levels prior to surgery

Participants will need to fill out a questionnaire / complete a fitness test at the beginning and end of the sessions.  Fully funded by the Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven charity, the programme is FREE to patients.

Commitment

It is important that you attend every session, in order to gain maximum benefit from the programme, and be committed to improving and then maintaining your fitness levels prior to surgery.

Am I eligible?

You may be eligible to join the programme if you are on the waiting list for reconstructive surgery. The aim of the programme is to make a significant difference to your level of fitness, and therefore your body’s ability to recover from surgery.  Your weight, levels of visceral fat and current level of fitness will all be assessed to determine whether you are suitable for the programme.  Please note, you will need to have your blood pressure checked, and treated if it is high, in order to be eligible to take part.

What happens next? How do I sign up?

Please notify Miss Skillman (joskillmanplasticsurgeon@gmail.com) or her secretary on 02476 965223 if you would like to take part in the programme and are able to commit to all the sessions. Your details will be passed on to Leighton Bentley, who will contact you directly.
